“Highly connected”: How the right’s political violence relates to a rise in criminal violence
This makes the Omicron variant more than 2 times as contagious as earlier variants. Viruses are constantly changing, which sometimes leads to new strains called “variants.” Different COVID-19 variants can have different incubation periods. Reasons related to race and ethnicity have long been employed in explaining why particular individuals or groups become sick or appear to be resistant to certain diseases. Race and ethnicity have also been used as the basis to scapegoat particular groups for causing epidemics.
America should give serious thought to voting reforms that would allow the anti-democratic faction to have representation without letting them take over one of our two major parties. Proportional representation is the best way to achieve that, though ranked choice voting and primary reform might be less radical and cause fewer governing headaches. Both would likely allow MAGA Republicans to have control in some states and localities (which, of course, they do now), while still allowing the majority of Republicans to support a pro-democracy party. Campaign finance reforms that empower small dollar donors also empower extremists, who are better at raising anger that gets those small dollar donations flowing. Big money in politics is also problematic, of course, but the problem of small dollar donors pushing our politics towards extremes has not been recognized or discussed.

For instance, Henkel and Rajaram (2011) found that both young and older adults exhibited post-collaborative benefits such that those who had previously collaborated recalled a greater number of items on the final individual recall test compared to those who had worked alone throughout. This well-documented post-collaborative benefit (see Rajaram & Pereira-Pasarin, 2010 for a review) in part results from the opportunity to be re-exposed to study information during the group recall phase (see Blumen & Rajaram, 2008 for a discussion of re-exposure gains). These sorts of social memory scenarios are common in everyday life, and results suggest that older adults the world’s largest foreign exchange market is located in can benefit from collaborative memory experiences just as well as young adults. Also working within the interpretive tradition (e.g., the symbolic interaction perspective), and hence, building upon Blumer’s work, Turner and Killian developed ‘emergent norm theory’ to account for collective behavior. In contrast to Blumer, Turner and Killian argued that there is substantial diversity among the participants in collective behavior. The emergent norm concept is used to explain the empirical fact that crowds are not unanimous in their feelings and expressions; individuals are quite diverse in terms of their sentiments as well as motives and actions.
He claims to have cured himself of the virus using a homeopathic cure derived from forsythia. Krumwiede, having faked being infected to boost sales of forsythia, is arrested for conspiracy and securities fraud. As the lines between real and fake blur, Americans increasingly chase the idea of authenticity. The first step may be to consider self-knowledge, truthfulness, and other building blocks on the road to personal growth. This explains the Great Depression and the run on banks that occurred in 1929, as well as economic recessions and financial crises that occur every few years. An example of this is when people observe other drivers speeding on the highway, and they start to speed themselves, or it might explain instances of “doping” that occur in waves among some professional athletes.
- In one study of collaborative memory, Henkel and Rajaram (2011) investigated the costs of collaboration by having young and older adults take part in three successive memory tests.
- As has been shown by the U.S. financial recession, the trigger of failure of Lehman Brothers dramatically spread the shock to the whole financial system and other financial markets.
- It’s not that the brand itself is so dominant that its every move has a sway on the masses.
- Findings indicating that the benefit afforded by offloading is unrelated to internal memory abilities suggests that older adults may be a group who are particularly well-suited to benefit from use of the strategy.
The same process would cause a stampeding wave of fear if someone were to suddenly yell “Fire! Cultural factors directly contribute to eating disorders and/or the influence may be mediated by psychological vulnerability. Nevertheless, it is important to emphasize that psychological theorizing related to eating disorders must account for cultural factors as well as the susceptibility of some to the influence of these factors in the development of eating disorders. Storyline
By contrast, in both clams and cockles, cancer cells have experienced repeated rounds of drastic change. Some cancer cells ended up with extra chromosomes — hundreds of them, in some cases. Studies on Tasmanian devils and dogs have revealed that the DNA of their cancers has changed relatively little. That finding is not too surprising in the case of Tasmanian devils, which probably gained their cancer just 40 years ago.
Most journalists and reporters assume that the public follows politics closely, is ideological, and has a real understanding of the details and facts. Unfortunately, the mainstream media, for a variety of reasons including intellectual laziness and careerism, is clinging desperately onto those fictions of folk democracy even when the evidence is abundant and obvious to the contrary. This translates into a news media that still does not fully appreciate — and is in willful denial about — the realities and the depths of the country’s democracy crisis in this moment of ascendant neofascism and illiberalism. It’s not that these levels of political violence are unprecedented – America is an unusually violent democracy compared to countries with similar levels of wealth and democratic history.
Government official Sun Feng kidnaps Orantes as leverage to obtain a vaccine for his village, holding her for months. WHO officials provide the village with the earliest vaccines, and she is released. Mitch stages a home “prom” for Jory after her boyfriend Andrew receives the vaccine, as life begins to return to normal. At the CDC, Dr. Ally Hextall determines the virus is a combination of genetic material from pig and bat-borne viruses.
More from Merriam-Webster on contagion
Puerperal, or “child-bed” fever—a post-childbirth infection that often caused fatal septicemia in the mother—was not considered contagious until the late 19th century, even though some lying-in hospitals experienced epidemics with nearly 100% mortality. A person or experience that teaches you a lesson improves your future behaviour by making you experience the bad effects of your actions. The Coronavirus Crisis
There’s an important lesson for modern marketers who seek to build brands that have the kind of influence that get people to move in concert. It’s not that the brand itself is so dominant that its every move has a sway on the masses. Instead, it’s the influence of its people—the community—and their people that mobilizes large groups of people to tune in, buy, vote a certain way, and a host of other desired behaviors. That’s the real effect, the network effect, and it’s the commitment to community that helps foster its reverberation.
Twenty-five percent of the students developed false memories related to the fictional event presented; false memories were more likely to be created by students who connected the fictional event to relevant self-knowledge. Where memories are based on shared experiences, social contagion may not lead to the creation of false memories, but to an alteration of the memory following the social interaction (Roediger et al., 2001). Thus, individuals may not come to remember something they never experienced themselves, but instead may remember what they experienced differently. Our work highlights how cognitive constraints impact digital content sharing activities. Humans have developed large brains, partly to handle the mental demands of social life36,37, but constraints imposed by our brain’s finite information processing bandwidth affect social behavior, for example, by limiting maximum group size23.
Financial contagion is the spread of an economic crisis from one market or region to another and can occur at domestic and international levels. The contagion can affect goods and services, labor, and capital goods used across markets connected by monetary and financial systems. It was determined that this was a form of mass hysteria or social contagion. Some workers developed these psychologically-induced symptoms, and others developed the same complaints as the “disease” spread what is pending order from worker to worker. Within the context of the H–H model, certain social cognitive skills—notably the ability to represent another conspecific’s mind or theory of mind—distinguish humans and perhaps apes from other animals. The implication is that the elaboration of social cognition in different animals (e.g., nonhuman primates, dogs, rodents) may depend on neural resources, with larger brains and larger memory capacities allowing for the development of more complex processes.
Threats against Members of Congress rose tenfold from 2016 to 2021, though they fell slightly last year. In the 1960s and 1970s we faced high levels of political violence, but it was largely against property, or involved foreign terrorists. We haven’t seen Americans targeting other Americans politically like this since Confederates reversed fusion markets Reconstruction and used violence and threats to return to power after the Civil War. It may be possible to zero in on the few parts of the genomes that have changed in the cancer cells to find new targets for drugs. He is also looking at the genomes of shellfish to see if they have evolved new ways to resist the invading cancer.
